Chapter 28
When Maya and Sandra escorted Anton back to the hotel room he was sharing with Ryan and marched through the door, Ryan popped to his feet from one of the double beds to greet them.
âWhat happened? Are you okay, Anton?â
âHeâs fine,â Maya said gruffly before shoving Anton down in the chair next to the small desk with the leather-bound guest services book. âNow you listen to me, if I catch you even poking your head out that door, itâs over. I will bring a whole world of hurt down upon you, so donât you dare test me.â
âI know a couple of Capitol Police officers who moonlight as security guards that I could post outside your door,â Sandra said.
âYou donât have to do that,â Anton tried assuring her. âI wonât try to sneak out again, I promise. You can trust me.â
âI donât have to trust you because Iâm counting on Ryan here to make sure you stick to your word, because if you donât, then itâs on both of you,â Sandra explained calmly.
Ryanâs eyes nearly bulged out of his head. âWhat?â
âItâs like the old buddy system. Youâre both responsible for each other. One screws up, you both pay the price,â Sandra said sharply.
âBut I didnât do anything wrongââ Ryan stopped short, catching himself, realizing that wasnât quite true.
âThis way, youâre both invested in playing by the rules, and speaking up if one of you gets any bright ideas to break them again.â
âMom, will you please stop? Nobodyâs going to break any more rules,â Ryan sighed.
There was a quiet knock at the door.
Ryanâs face fell as Maya crossed the room and opened it.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, startled to see her mother.
âItâs past curfew. You should be in your room.â
âI . . . uh . . . I . . .â Vanessa stammered, drawing a complete blank as to how to explain why she was there.
âIf you keep your mouth shut, donât say another word, and just turn back around and head straight to your room and donât try to come back when weâre gone, I will pretend you were never here,â Maya said evenly.
Vanessa opened her mouth to speak, thought better of it, and then scooted away.
Maya leaned out the door and called after her, âRemember, these halls have security cameras!â
Sandra shot Ryan a hard look.
âWe were just going to watch a movie together,â Ryan mumbled, looking at his mother sheepishly.
Sandra jabbed a finger in Antonâs direction. âStay put.â
âYes, Mrs. Wallage,â Anton whispered, contrite.
Then she walked over and joined Maya, who was staring down the hall, making sure Vanessa actually got on the elevator to go back to her room. As they stepped out into the hall and Sandra grabbed the door handle to swing it shut, she heard Anton ask, âWhat happens now?â
She poked her head back in the room. âWhat do you mean?â
âTo me? I am seen on camera going into the building. Are the police going to take me in for questioning? Am I going to have
